BULLDOG BASKETBALL

The Bulldog basketball team by no means played poorly in Round One of their Eddy County War series with Carlsbad Dec. 19 in Cave Country. There's just not a whole lot you can do when the other team won't stop raining three's. In a contest that saw the Class 5A Cavemen out-trey their two-point field goals 11-10, the 'Dogs were ultimately unable to keep pace in the second half despite leading 35-28 at the break, suffering their second loss of the season on the road, 60-54.
The boys in orange got off to a quick start in the contest, following a breakaway layup off the steal by Charlie Campbell after the opening tip with a Braylon Vega trey and a bucket in the paint by Trent Egeland to take an 8-2 lead. As the first quarter progressed, the 'Dogs kept up their solid offensive performance with a Clay Kincaid dunk and consecutive jumpers from Vega, but something changed in between: the Cavemen began knocking down every shot they took from beyond the arc. One each from Maliq Mills, Tanner Cornum, Shane Sullivan and Zee Huerta tied things up for Carlsbad at 14-all with 50 seconds to go, and Carlsbad would take its first lead on a pair in the paint by Sullivan and Huerta, with Vega cutting Artesia's deficit to two, 18-16, with a basket at the buzzer.
The Cavemen continued to hit from outside the arc in the second, but the Bulldogs were able to add a few more longballs of their own to retake control of the game. Mario DeLeon and Dryden Preece took their turns from three-point land in the early goings of the period following an opening dunk from Egeland and a Campbell and-one. Campbell would follow with a trifecta of his own and another coast-to-coast layup on a steal, however, and after Vega's second three of the night countered another from DeLeon, a running jumper and a trey at the buzzer by Cael Houghtaling put the Runnin' 'Dogs up by seven at intermission, 35-28.
Carlsbad kicked off the third with a bomb by Mills and got an old-fashioned three-point play from DeLeon a few minutes later, but with a pair in the paint by Kincaid, an Egeland offensive putback, and a jumper and an and-one from Campbell, the Bulldogs were able to maintain their lead through the final minute-and-a-half of the quarter, 46-39. In the waning seconds, however, a pair of three-pointers by Huerta bookended a Houghtaling outback on the offensive boards and a shot off the glass by Preece to cut Artesia's advantage to one, 48-47, going into the final eight minutes.
There, the wheels would unfortunately come off offensively for the 'Dogs. Following an opening bucket by Egeland, Artesia would not score again from the field in the contest, and what had been a middling evening from the free-throw line to that point would go further south, as the Bulldogs went 4-11 at the stripe in the fourth to finish 8-20 on the game. The Cavemen were able to take the lead early on back-to-back baskets from Huerta, and though the 'Dogs would twice tie it up, a final trey from DeLeon with 3:15 to go in the game ultimately sealed the deal. That shot would be chased by a breakaway layup off the steal by Sullivan to make it 58-53, and Artesia ended the game amidst a flurry of missed shots and turnovers to fall by six, 60-54.
Huerta finished with 17 to lead all scorers on a night that saw every Caveman to get in the book hit at least one three. Campbell had 15 for Artesia, followed by Vega with 14.

The Bulldogs' third outing of the season against a fellow Class 4A opponent came on the heels of a tough loss to Carlsbad, so the boys in orange wouldn't have been blamed for being a bit fatigued. But with the exception of an anomalously low-scoring third quarter, the Runnin' 'Dogs were on point Dec. 20 against Valley at Bulldog Pit in a 59-39 victory over the Vikings.
Clay Kincaid came out en fuego in the paint, giving the 'Dogs a quick 6-0 lead that became 9-0 on a trey from Cael Houghtaling. A pair of treys from Valley's Izayah Sanchez helped boost the Vikes back within a point, 11-10, as the first quarter fell under two minutes. But another 8-0 run by Artesia that included a bucket and one and a layup from Charlie Campbell and a Braylon Vega jumper made it 19-13 going into the second.
There, Valley continued to keep themselves within striking distance from beyond the arc, but a three and a mid-air double-clutch from Vega, along with a Houghtaling alley-oop layup, saw the Bulldogs continuing to build on their lead. Campbell posted two baskets of his own in the quarter while bumping his total from the line to 8-8, and a last-second layup by Corbyn Dominguez off the pass from Jack Byers sent the 'Dogs in at the break with a 14-point lead in hand, 37-23.
The Bulldogs -- typically fleet out of the gate in the second half -- came out limping a bit in the third, with a string of turnovers and missed shots limiting their offensive opportunities. As a result, Artesia managed just three points -- a turnaround jumper from Dominguez and a Vega free throw -- in the period to seven from Valley's Jeremiah Archuleta and four from Xavier Brito that got the Vikings right back into the game, 40-34. But the 'Dogs shone on both ends of the court in the fourth, outscoring Valley 19-5. The Vikings posted just one early field goal in the final eight minutes as the boys in orange regained their stride, getting four baskets from Campbell -- two with an and-one attached -- and one each from Vega and Trent Egeland as they powered their way to the 20-point win.
Campbell led all scorers in the bout with 26 points and was a perfect 10-10 from the stripe. Vega finished with 12 and Kincaid with nine, and Archuleta and Brito closed out with 13 and 11, respectively, for Valley.

LADY BULLDOG BASKETBALL

The fact that the Lady Bulldogs' 10-point win over their Class 5A county rivals on the road could easily have been by a much wider margin spoke volumes for Artesia's progress following their return from the Joe Armijo Basketball Classic at Albuquerque Academy.
Turnovers hindered the Lady 'Dogs throughout Round One of their Eddy County War series Dec. 19 in Carlsbad, limiting offensive opportunities that would have eliminated any and all suspense. As it was, however, the Artesia girls took a lead in the final 40 seconds of the opening quarter they'd go on to hold for the remainder of the game as they moved to 4-5 on the season with a 45-35 win over the Cavegirls.
Fast and aggressive defense helped the Lady Bulldogs secure that initial advantage. The first quarter was a low-scoring one for both squads, tied 6-6 with just over a minute to go. But Artesia forced two of the Cavegirls' six turnovers in the period in the final seconds to facilitate a Gracen Kuykendall layup and Brooklyn Fuentes jumper that put the Lady 'Dogs up 10-6 going into the second.
That quarter would ultimately make the difference for Artesia. Back-to-back buckets by Ashton Craft and Avery Frederick and another shot in the paint from Craft helped the Lady Bulldogs expand their lead to seven, 16-9, ahead of a trey and two from the free-throw line by Carlsbad's Serena Carrasco. That would trim the Cavegirls' deficit back to two, but the girls in orange closed out the first half on a 12-2 run that included two baskets and two from the stripe by Kuykendall, a bucket each by Fuentes and Frederick, and a pair of free throws from Craft to take a healthy 12-point advantage in at the half, 28-16.

Scoring would be at a premium once again in the final two quarters of play. The Lady 'Dogs continued to do the bulk of their damage under the basket, with Frederick posting two buckets, fellow post Kuykendall one, and center Zaleigh Greer a last-second shot off the glass to keep Artesia up by double digits, 38-25, heading into the fourth. And while the Cavegirls would outscore the Lady Bulldogs 10-7 in that quarter with help from three-pointers by Carrasco and Valerie Veloz, the Artesia girls were able to hold on for their fourth win of the season.
Kuykendall finished with 16 points to lead all scorers in the bout, followed by Frederick with 10 and Craft with nine. Carrasco had 12 for Carlsbad.

It's highly unlikely anyone had nine total field goals and 60 combined free throws on their bingo card Dec. 20 when the Lady Bulldog basketball team headed to Gadsden to take on the Class 5A Lady Panthers. But that's what transpired on a whistle-heavy and shooting-lite afternoon in Southwest New Mexico, and the Artesia girls were able to do just enough in the final seconds of a slow trudge to the finish to even their record at 5-5 with a 28-24 win.
The Lady 'Dogs led by just one point coming out of the third quarter, 20-19, and considering the unpredictability of the officiating to that point, it was truly anyone's game as the fourth quarter commenced. As had been the case for much of the contest, neither team was able to find the basket through the opening two-and-a-half minutes, and with 5:39 to go in the game, a free throw was all Gadsden needed to tie things up, 20-20. Jordan Rone answered with a pair from the line for Artesia, but as players for both squads began to inevitably foul out, the Lady Panthers were able to answer both those shots and one from Brooklyn Fuentes in kind to keep the score knotted at 23-all with 3:37 on the clock.
Gadsden went to the line again with 2:12 left but would miss both opportunities, and a baseline jumper from Avery Frederick on a pass from Peyton Barela put Artesia up 25-23 as the contest fell under two minutes. Another trip to the stripe by Gadsden produced just a single free throw that was answered by Fuentes to maintain the two-point margin, and the Lady Panthers would miss two more freebies at the 33-second mark. As the drought from the field continued, that would prove to be Gadsden's last chance. The Lady Bulldogs missed a pair of free throws as well in the final seconds, but a rebound and putback of the second by Frederick put the game finally out of reach and set the final: 28-24.
Both the Lady 'Dogs and Lady Panthers inched into double-digit scoring just once through four quarters, as Artesia lead 5-2 at the end of one and 15-8 at the half. Gadsden posted two field goals apiece in the second and third quarters, while the Lady Bulldogs had just one bucket per quarter before coming through with two in the fourth. It all came down to the line in the end, from which the Panthers went 16-32 to Artesia's 18-28.

What better way to open the season than with a few history book revisions?
The Artesia High School swim teams travelled to Monahans, Texas, Nov. 1 to kick off their 2025-26 campaign, and senior captain Aidan Ciro wasted no time shattering a pair of both AHS and Monahans records. Ciro swam first-place, state-qualifying times in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. His time of 48.25 in the 100 free broke a nine-year-old school record previously set by Jonathan Darnell in 2016. His 200 free mark of 1:49.85 was also a new school record. Both times additionally set new records for both the Monahans Invitational and the Monahans Aquatic Center pool.
Also qualifying for state in the season opener was sophomore Morgan Fisher in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke with respective times of 2:29.23 and 1:14.57. It was a stellar introduction for the Artesia contingent, which saw the Lady Bulldogs place fourth overall and the Bulldogs fifth at the meet.

Pecos Invitational
The AHS swim teams headed back to Texas Nov. 15 for the Pecos Invitational, once again delivering solid results against challenging fields. The Lady 'Dogs came in fifth overall on the meet and the Bulldogs eighth.
The two squads posted a state qualification apiece in Pecos. Senior Aidan Ciro added the boys' 100-yard butterfly to his list -- which includes qualifications in the 200 and 100 freestyle events, earned Nov. 1 in Monahans, Texas -- placing first overall out of a field of 20 with a time of 54.31. Lady Bulldog sophomore Morgan Fisher requalified in the girls' 200 individual medley with a third-place mark of 2:31.25.
Fisher also came in first out of 18 competitors in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.26, just off the state mark. Fisher qualified in the event with a 1:14.57 in Artesia's season-opening meet in Monahans, Texas. Placing third at the Pecos Invite with a time of 56.23 in the boys' 100 freestyle was freshman Joziah Murdoch, while senior Sarah Plotner came in fourth in the girls' 500 freestyle with a 6:04.50.

Bob Reid Invitational
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs left a host of fellow standout swimmers in their wake Dec. 6 at the Bob Reid Invitational in Hobbs, with the Artesia girls finishing behind only Rio Rancho as the runner-up in a 13-team field and the boys coming in fourth behind Rio Rancho, Cleveland and Carlsbad in a field of 11.
The Lady 'Dogs added two new state qualifications to their list, becoming the first to qualify a relay event. The 200-yard medley team of junior Johanna Padilla, sophomore Morgan Fisher, senior Sarah Plotner and freshman Carly DeHoyos came in second in their race with a time of 2:04.85. Plotner, meanwhile, topped the podium in the girls' 200 individual medley with a qualifying time of 2:32.27.
Fisher picked up two more gold medals for the Artesia girls, winning the girls' 100 breaststroke with a tie of 1:14.92, just three-hundredths of a second off the qualifying mark. Fisher previously qualified in the event Nov. 1 at the Monahans Invitational. The sophomore also took first in the girls' 200 freestyle with a 2:14.28. Padilla, meanwhile, won the girls' 100 backstroke with a time of 1:07.76, just over two seconds away from qualification.
Also placing second at the meet were the girls' 200 freestyle relay team of Plotner, Fisher, London Acosta and Anikah Wisen with a time of 1:53.88 and the girls' 400 free relay group of Padilla, Acosta, Wisen and Carly DeHoyos with a 4:19.82. Carlsbad Holiday Invitational

The always anticipated Carlsbad Holiday Invitational brought Christmas a little early to the Bulldog and Lady Bulldog swim teams. The Artesia boys placed second overall and the girls third at the Dec. 13 meet, which was hosted by the Artesia Aquatic Center due to ongoing construction on the campus of Carlsbad High School.
The Holiday Invite was a breakout competition for the 'Dogs, who added four new state qualifications to their growing list -- including their first two qualified relays -- despite not swimming with a full roster. Individually, senior Aidan Ciro topped the podium in both the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke with respective qualifying times of 21.83 and 54.94. The Bulldogs also qualified their 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams -- both consisting of Ciro, Alec Ciro, Joziah Murdoch and Chaz Rogers -- with third- and first-place times of 1:50.59 and 1:37.39. Including the relays, Aidan Ciro's total number of state events now stands at seven.
The Lady Bulldogs were unable to add any new state times to their tally, but on a day that saw, as head coach Andrea Ciro stated, "tons of best times and great swims" take place in Artesia's home pool, there was still much to celebrate. Placing first overall in the girls' 100 backstroke was Johanna Padilla with a time of 1:08.19, and the teams logged a trio of runner-up finishes: Rogers in the boys' 200 freestyle (2:23.47); Murdoch in the boys' 500 freestyle (5:36.38); and the girls' 200 freestyle relay team of Padilla, Sarah Plotner, London Acosta and Carly DeHoyos (1:53.86).
Coming away with bronze medals were Murdoch in the boys' 100 butterfly (59.25); Anikah Wisen in the girls' 100 freestyle (1:03.59) and 200 freestyle (2:21.76); Morgan Fisher in the girls' 100 breaststroke (1:15.83); and the girls' 200 medley relay group of Padilla, Fisher, Wisen and DeHoyos (2:09.39). The boys' 400 free relay team of Bryce Walton, MJ Anderson, Kaleb Barquero and Deacon Simons finished fourth in their event with a 4:38.43, as did Simons in the 200 IM (3:01.55) and Alec Ciro in the 100 backstroke (1:08.20).

Taos Tangle in the Timbers

PICTURED: The Bulldog and Lady Bulldog wrestling teams pose with their third-place trophies and individual medals following the Tangle in the Timbers tournament at Taos High School.
The Artesia wrestlers' first full tournament of the season saw both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs bringing home third-place hardware from the Taos Tangle in the Timbers.
Against some stiff Class A-4A competition, the Artesia squads also headed back to the City of Champions with a trio of gold medals, two silvers, and three bronzes in tow. The 'Dogs topped the podium in the two highest weight classes, with senior Briggs Beavers finishing first in the Heavyweight Division and classmate Daniel Madrid winning the 165-pound class. Beavers went 4-1 through five rounds of competition, defeating a pair of host Tiger wrestlers (Archuleta, :19; Martinez, :26) and athletes from Raton (Najera, :38) and Bernalillo (Castillo, :34) en route to the title. Madrid, meanwhile, went an unbeaten 5-0 with wins over wrestlers from Las Vegas Robertson (Jackson, 6:50), Bernalillo (Sheije, 1:57), Pojoaque Valley (Padilla, :43) and Espanola Valley (Maestas, 5:25) before defeating Oshel of Los Alamos by 8-4 decision in his final match. On the girls' side, freshman Katie Dowell took top honors in the 155-pound class, defeating teammates Navelia Aguilar (1:04), Issibell Ortega of Raton (2:48), and Aaliyah Roybal of Pecos (3:43) on her way to gold.
The Lady Bulldogs also picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in Taos. Freshman Leila Irvin bested Raton's Miranda Medina (1:29) before coming up short of Natalie Romero of Pojoaque Valley (3:16) in the 145-pound division, and senior Fatima Alonso defeated Daisy Sanchez of Pecos (4:52) before falling to Espanola Valley's Kianna Moreland (2:25) in the 190-Pound/Heavyweight class. Freshman Kylie Rodriguez placed third for the Lady 'Dogs in the 125-pound division, as did sophomore Deion Loya and freshman Jonathan Corza for the Bulldogs in the 175-pound and 126-pound classes, respectively.

Artesia wrestling's first action of the season on its home mats took place Dec. 16 with the Ruidoso/Goddard District 4 Tri-Dual at the old boys' gym. The Bulldogs came out even with the Warriors, 42-42, before defeating the Rockets 54-29. The Lady Bulldogs, meanwhile, who were plagued by forfeits on the day, came up short of both Goddard (48-24) and Ruidoso (36-24).
Delivering wins for the Bulldogs versus Ruidoso were Colt Moziejko (138), Daniel Madrid (165), Isaac Husky (175) and Edel Villa (190). The 'Dogs took three matches by forfeit. Against Goddard, the Artesia boys got pins from Trenton Southerland (106), Moziejko (138), Tristan Shannon (144), Jaedon Smith (150), Deion Loya (175) and Sergio Ortega (285), with three wins coming by forfeit. Rio Hondo Scuffle

The Big Orange was back in Roswell Dec. 19 and 20 for the Rio Hondo Scuffle, which saw the girls' JV and varsity and boys' JV teams taking to the mats Friday and the boys' varsity on Saturday.
The Lady Bulldogs got a big runner-up finish from Leila Irvin in the stacked tournament. Competing in the 145-pound class, the freshman went 4-1 on the day, going undefeated through three rounds of pool play before topping Hobbs' Jazzlyn Ornelas in the semifinal round by fall at 1:20. Irvin then came up just short of Anastaci Cisneros of Class 5A Las Cruces High in the championship match, falling at 1:28.
In the varsity boys' tournament, the Bulldogs performed well overall against big fields of some of the top competition in the state. Junior Colt Moziejko and senior Daniel Madrid finished fifth overall in the 132- and 165-pounds divisions, respectively, with Moziejko topping Hobbs' Mavrick Tillman in the fifth-place match at 1:23 and Madrid defeating wrestlers from Clovis and Amarillo, Texas, in pool play before winning by forfeit in the fifth-place match.
The Bulldog JV had an excellent outing the day before, coming in third overall as a team. The 'Dogs earned a whopping six gold medals at the Rio Hondo, with freshmen Jonathan Corza (126 pounds) and Isaac Huskey (175), sophomore Deion Loya (175), and junior Miles Love (190) going 3-0 in their respective brackets to top the podium, and sophomore Cameron Martin and junior Sergio Ortega winning a pair of matches each to take first in their 150- and 285-pound brackets. Coming in second were freshmen Braxton Norman (157) and Bryan Molina (165), sophomores Coby Roark (165) and Hartley Greenwood (165), and junior Evan Heald (190), while freshmen Atley Starnes and Daniel Cortez got the bronze in the 132- and 215-pound weight classes.
